Pierre THOMA (Switzerland)

Pierre Thoma (1949, Bern, Switzerland) Ц musician, composer, lingua-artist. Graduated from the University of Geneva majoring in Sociology, at the same time received musical education at the Geneva Conservatory of Music specialising in Musical Theory and Percussion. He covers a wide range from electro-acoustic music to noise trends, composing music for movies, various theatre and ballet performances. Thoma takes a special interest in the area of sound poetry and lingua art, where alongside traditional techniques of simultaneous vocal various samples are also used, noises and sounds of the environment surrounding the installation are introduced into the pieces. He is the founder and member of the composersТ association УDigitalismusФ (Geneva), whose participants make use of new technologies in creating musical pieces. He is the author of numerous instrumental and vocal releases, including the following ones: Exil (for contralto voice and clarinet, 1985), Mutations (for percussion solo, 1983), Ton sur ton (for viola and clarinet, 1985), Densités (for piano solo, 1985), Convergences (for flute solo, 1986), Jour-nuit (for violin and 4 track-tape, 1987), Hérag (for piano, 1988), Strates (for piano and violoncello, 1989), Yon (for organ, 1991), Drums (for percussion, 1991), Jour-nuit (for violin, 1991), Déchirure (Alinnik) (for flute and 2 percussion, 1993) and others. He is the author of a number of sound-performances realised on various expositional grounds in Switzerland, including such as: Wasser-Geflüster (Geneva, 1995), Geflüster (Zurich, 1996), Zapping-Music (Geneva, 1997), јngelaТs voice (Zurich, 1997), Maschinen und Menschen (Bern, 1998), Sol (Geneva, 1998) and others. He participated in various international festivals of experimental poetry, among them are the following: La Bâtie Festival (Geneva, 1992), Poesia Totale Festival (Locarno, 1997), Poésie Bleue Festival (Zurich, 1997), Veneziapoesia Festival (Venice, 1997), Poésie Bleue Festival (Madrid, 1998), Percorsi poesia pavia festival (Pavia, 1998), A slice of noise festival (Geneva, 1999), La nave dei folli festival (Locarno, 1999), Poets and People festival (within Venice biennial, 1999), W. Burroughs Experience festival (Lausanne, 1999) and others. Thoma created a series of audio installations, some of them contain sound features of the environment, including the following: Tranches dТextérier (Geneva, 1986), Relief (Geneva, 1987), Machines II (Basel, 1990), Musik zum begleiten (Geneva, 1997), Maschinen und Menschen (Bern, 1998), Etude pour une cuve à vin (Valais, 1998) and audio installations of the exhibition nature: Outil-matière (Jardin-Alpin Gallery, Geneva, for J. GabrielТs exhibition, 1997), for M.-F. and P. Martin: In between (Clink Wharf Gallery, London, 1998), Le privé et lТintime (Bernasconi Gallery, Geneva, 1999), donner chaud (Hal Gallery, Anvers, 1999). Among the research and bibliographic literature on the authorТs activities are the folowing editions: Vincent Barras: LТoeuvre et la Suisa (Dissonance #14/88), Jean-Pierre Aman: Musique pour une fin de siècle, twenty discussions with Swiss composers (Ed. Revue Musicale de Suisse Romande, 1994) and others. Pierre Thoma lives and works in Geneva (Switzerland).
