Amanda STEWART (Australia)
Amanda Stewart (1959, Sydney, Australia) Ц poet, performer, video artist. In 1981 graduated from the University of Technology (Sydney) majoring in У ProductionФ (radio, film, video), also studied Media-Planning and Professional Writing. She is actively working in the area of contemporary art at the junction of genres, using text, sound, video and action practices. In 1998 she released a set (book and CD) of selected productions I/T: Selected Poems 1980-1996 (Surry Hills: Here and There Books, 1998). Stewart is the author of a number of sound poetry publications in the international anthologies (MC, CD-formats), including such as: NMA Tapes 5 (Victoria: NMA Publications, 1988), Mixed Doubles (Victoria: NMA Publications, 1989), Vocal Neighborhoods: A Walk through the Post-Sound Poetry Landscape (Leonardo Music Journal, Cambridge, MA: MIT Press, 1993), I Nuovi Mondi (Cento: Baobab Publishers, 1994), The Meridian Crossings (Lowlands label, Czech Republic, 1995). She has participated in a large number of festivals and forums of experimental poetry and contemporary art, including such as: Adelaide Festival (Adelaide, 1984), Sydney Biennial (Sydney, 1982; 1984), УbobeobiФ, Internationales Festival der Lautpoesie (Berlin, 1996), Geneva Festival (Geneva, 1996), and also in the: 25 Years of Australian Performance Art Festival (Melbourne), Ars Electronica (Linz), Australian Audiotheque (Kobe), Wings of Sound (Helsinki), Ten Years of Soho Festival (New York) and others. She is the co-organiser and participant of the intermedia-group УMachine For Making SenseФ (J. Denley, R. Rue, A. Stewart, S. Wishart, Ch. Mann), being a member of which she produced collective CD-releases: on second thoughts (OO Discs Ц Tall Poppies, USA Ц Australia, 1994), Talk is Cheap (Potts Point: Split Records, 1996), Dissect the Body (Potts Point: Split Records, 1998), consciousness (Potts Point: Split Records, 1999). In 1995 Stewart founded a trio УAllosФ (Amsterdam Ц Sydney, jointly with A. La Berge and J. Meneses). Together with these groups she conducted numerous performances in Australia, USA, Cuba, and in the European countries. StewartТs productions were repeatedly broadcast on various TV and radio stations, including such as: ABC Radio National (Sydney), Radio Magyar (Budapest), Radio 100 (Amsterdam), BBC (London), SFB (Berlin), WDR (Cologne), ORF (Vienna) and many others. She is the author of a number of experimental videos and films, including the following ones: U.S.. U.S... (in collaboration with N. Freeman, 1981), Eclipse of the Man-Made Sun (in collaboration with N. Freeman, 1991; of the awards at the film festivals in Australia, USA, Japan, Holland, France) and others. In collaboration with the composer C. Bright she composed an opera УThe Sinking of the Rainbow WarriorФ (1997), that was staged and performed within the Sydney Festival 1997 (broadcast on the ABC Radio, 1999, CD-release at the Australian Music Centre, 2000). She is a laureate and holder of various awards in the field of art, including such as: UN Association of Australia Media Peace Prize (1985), Australian FM HiFi Award (1988), Bronze Apple Award, National Educational Film and Video Festival (San Francisco, 1991), Australian Film Institute Award (1991), Anne Elder Poetry Prize (National Literary Awards, 1999) and others. Amanda Stewart lives and works in Surry Hills (Australia).
