Gary SINGH (USA)

Gary Singh (San Jose, California, USA) Ц musician, lingua-artist. Started his creative atistic activities in the late 1980s. Graduated from the San Jose State University (San Jose), majoring in the Electro-Acoustic Music (¬ј) and related areas of the arts (ћј). He studied Theory of Music under the supervision of A. Strange, Theory of New Media, attending the course of J. Slayton, and basics of Psychology in R. RuckerТs course. The wide creative range tackled by Singh Ц from use of standard set of acoustic and electro-acoustic instruments to computer manipulations of artificial audio environments Ц allows the author not only to conduct the interdisciplinary musical studies, but also to combine them to solve various complicated tasks. One of the main areas of research for Singh is the text-sound composition where the priority is given to the concept-art decisions. As a rule, the author formulates and defines the general idea of the production in which a significant role is given to the improvisation and possible interpretations of the performers. Among his main productions are the following: Evidence of Abuse (1991), Duet for Sheet Metal and Shopping Cart (1992), My Name is Not Ed (1993), Kataklysmos (1993-94), Seriously Professional (1994), Three American Heroes (1994), Ryokousha no tame no Arabia go (1995), Machine Wash Warm (1995) and others. A number of these productions were performed at various concerts, musical colloquia and conferences, and also at the international festivals of new music, including such as: Voces Novae Festival of New Music (Los Angeles, 1994), NYU Music-Technology-Dance Summer Program (Lucca, 1995), Silicon Сlectric Art Music (New York, 1995), 3 Transpacific Festival of contemporary sound practices УSound Culture 96Ф (San Francisco, 1996), The Attic Festival (Las Vegas, 1996), International Computer Music Conference (Hong Kong, 1996), Southeast Asia Conference on Music Technology (Serdang, 2000). For several years he performed with the ensemble of electro-acoustic music of the University of San Jose at various educational institutions in California, including such as San Jose State University (San Jose), California Institute of the Arts (Valencia), California State University (Fresno), Dominican College (San Rafael) and others. Since 1998 Singh has participated in the musical-choreographic project УAsterisk* Movement and SoundФ, being a member of which he conducted a number of musical performances at the Institute of Art Technology (San Jose), San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art (San Jose) and others. He is the author of a number of musical publications, including Inrejoan, УSounds of the InternetФ (Minus Habens Records, 1995); his productions were broadcast on the radio in the USA, Brazil, Germany, Hungary and other countries. He has published several theoretical articles dedicated to the issues of contemporary music, and prosaic productions, including such as Review of the International Computer Music Conference (ARRAY Vol.14, no 2, 1995; Vol.17, no 3, 1998), Switch (Vol.3, no 3, 1997), Reed Magazine (Vol.5, 1998). He is a prize-winner of various grant competitions, a holder of the Meritorious Achievement Award for Sound (J.F. Kennedy Center for Performing Arts, American College Theatre Festival, 1993). Gary Singh lives and works in San Jose (California, USA).
