Xavier SABATER (Spain)

Xavier Sabater (1953, Barcelona, Spain) poet, video-artist, publisher. He is involved in various areas of contemporary poetry, combining elements of linear and visual-phonetic literature. He is one of the few Spanish poets who in the their works make use of various media-environments a number of his works are video, audio, and electronic productions. He has published several books of experimental poetry (some of them are accompanied by sound-supplement), including such as: Dark De Silences Brass (1978), Saba Sanyo Casio (1991), Poems Low Earth (1994) and others. His works are published in numerous literary magazines, catalogues, miscellanies, and anthologies both in Spain and abroad. Being one of the pioneers of the Spanish video poetry, Sabater comprehensively promotes the development of this artistic trend in his own country, arranging group video shows and discussions. His video works were shown at various international exhibitions of video art and experimental poetry. For several years he collaborated with the National Spanish TV. Sabater is the editor for the publishing house Sedicions (Barcelona), that focuses on publishing experimental poetry books (visual and sound poetry, poly-poetry), surrealist short stories, graphic albums and historical manifestos. Among the books published within the series Selecciones de Poesia are the following ones: Polipoesia Primera Antologia (anthology of Spanish sound poetry, among the participants are: L. Barber, J. M. Calleja, B. Ferrando, F. Miranda, J. R. Roig and others; edited by X. Sabater, introduction by E. Minarelli), Poesia Experimental-93 (anthology of Spanish visual poetry, among the participants are: J.C.J. Aberasturi, N. Amaro, P. Del Barco, J. Brossa, B. Ferrando, A. Gomes, J. M. De La Pezuela, A. Rafols-Casamada, G. Viladot; edited by J. M. Calleja). Besides the mentioned series the publishing house Sedicions publishes the following collections: Heterodoxos, La Mirada Oculta, De Lo Espiritual En El Arte and others. Sabater is the publisher and editor of the Internet-magazine of avant-garde literature and art Barcelona Attractions (www.lanzadera.com/attractions), that focuses on the issues of theory and practice of the international experimental poetry, domestic and foreign artistic events. He is one of the organisers and director of the Festival De Polipoesia De Barcelona, which took place for the seventh time in August 1999 (among the participants are: F. Aguiar, E. Minarelli, Ph. Menezes, R. Grau, J. M. Calleja, J.R. Roig, Merz Mail and others), he is also the co-ordinator of the 1er Congrés Internacional De Polipoesia (Barcelona, 1999), where the prospects of the development of the international trend of poly-poetry were discussed (among the participants are: Ch. Scholz, N. Zurbrugg, D. Suzuki, J. Iges, Ph. Menezes, E. Minarelli and others). Since 1981 Sabater has been actively performing his programs in various cities in Spain and participating in different international festivals of experimental poetry in Italy, Portugal, Germany, including such as: bobeobi, Internationales Festival der Lautpoesie (Berlin, 1998). In 1992 he performed within documenta 9 (Kassel). Xavier Sabater lives and works in Barcelona (Spain).
