Américo RODRIGUES (Portugal)
Américo Rodrigues (1961, Guarda, Portugal) Ц poet, essay writer, director. In 1979 he graduated from the Escola Secundaria Alfonso de Albuquerque (Guarda). He started his creative literary and artistic activities in 1979, at that time he made his first experiments in the area of sound poetry; those experiments were conducted in Paris under the supervision of the actress C. Dasté. He has published a number of books, brochures, editions of object poetry, among them are the following ones: A estreia do Outro Gesto (Guarda: Authors Ed., 1989), Patrimonio de Afectos (Guarda: Fundacao Frei Pedro, 1995), Vir ao Nascedoiro e Outras Historias (Guarda: Authors Ed., 1996), Instante Exacto (Guarda: A Mar Arte Ed., 1997), O Mundo dos Outros (Guarda: Aquilo Ed., 2000). Rodrigues is deeply involved in the phonetic poetry, integrally developing traditions of the European school. He also makes use of the possibilities of vocal improvisation in the applied variations Ц in the theatrical performances, musical-poetic stagings and performance. Quite often in his performances besides the articulated vocal he introduces various wind and noise instruments, including whistles, clarions, pipes and others. A. Rodrigues presented his sound poetry productions and recitations at various international colloquia, forums and festivals of contemporary art and literature, including the recent events: Revoltallo (Vigo, 1998), ZDB Music (Lisbon, 1998), Festival de Artes de Rua (Evora, 1998), LEM (Barcelona, 1999), Gesto Orelhudo (Agueda, 1999), Creativa 99 (Beja, 1999), Festival УO da GuardaФ (Guarda, 1999) and others. He has conducted numerous sessional performances, concerts, and plastic performances, jointly with C. Zingaro, J. Morgan, M.M. Mota, A. Loops, J. Oliveira, E. Fernandes, H. Kobayashi, N. Khalsa and others, and also with such dancers and artists as C. Benedita, V. Mantero, M. Pereira, K. Prisu, D.S. Blanco. In 2000 Rodrigues, accompanied by the mixed group of wind and electro-acoustic instruments, released his solo album O Despertar do Funambulo (Porto-Guarda: Aquilo e Audeo, 2000) in which he represented his sound poetry works of the 1990s. When speaking about Rodrigues's creative activities, the researchers of the genre emphasise the У... the rhythmic sensibility of works done under the influence of an Iberian speech in which Neolatin languages combine with the Arabic and Moorish speech pulse and chantФ... (Ph. Menezes) and that УThe truth is Américo Rodrigues entrusts himself to the power of his throat, no tricks or deceiving, to enchant, to stun and seduce the audienceФ (E. Minarelli). Rodrigues's works were repeatedly broadcast on radio stations in Portugal, including such as RDP Centro (Coimbra), Radio Nova (Porto), Radio de Coimbra (Coimbra). In 1999 he organised an international festival of sound poetry УCorrentes de ArФ (Guarda, Portugal), where participated J. Blaine, E. Minarelli, Ph. Menezes, E. Escoffet, J. Blonk and others. Since 1982 he has been director and producer with the theatrical group УAquilo,Ф with which he participated in numerous festivals and tours about the whole of Europe. At the moment he is working at his doctorate dissertation at the University of Beira Interior (Covilha). Américo Rodrigues lives and works in Guarda (Portugal).
