Isabella BEUMER (Germany)
Isabella Beumer (1951, Herford, Germany) – poet, lingua-artist, artist. Studied in depth the Theory and History of Sound Poetry and Experimental Literature under the supervision of the known representatives of international poetic schools – H.C. Artmann, G. Rühm, A. Ginsberg, B. Bargeld. In 1994 she was one of G. Steinwachs’s master-students, from 1993 to 1994 she took a course of traditional for Siberia, Tibet and a number of other regions vocal practices of guttural singing delivered by S. Namtchylak. She is the author of a number of poetry books, among them are the following ones: das meinen abgepflückt (Hamburg: Rospo-Verlag, 1994), umsch: reiben... (Bielefeld: Pendragon-Verlag, 1996), allenfalls spuren (Bramsche: Rasch-Verlag, 2000) and others. Beumer is working much in the area of expressive graphics with the elements of visual poetry, some of her books are illustrated with her own graphic pieces. She regularly publishes her poetry productions in various literary miscellanies and anthologies, including such as: Lyrik als Aufgabe (H.C. Artmann, Wien: Passagenverlag, 1995), Vierfalt-Kunst in Schwalenberg’94 (Bonn: VG-Bild-Kunst, 1995), Ansichten. Begegnung mit Literatur (Bramsche: Rasch-Verlag, 1996), etc. Since 1991 she has quite often shown her solo sound poetry and vocal programs, musical peformances both in Germany and abroad. Beumer’s original style of performing has developed on the basis of the combination of verbal and lingual elements of the poetic speech and a wide sound-dynamic range of voice modulations. She is the author of a number of sound poetry and musical albums, including the following ones: red:snow:and:face:noise (CD, Voc. u Piano, 1997), Freitag Der Dreizehnte (CD, jointly with U.-C. Obier, G. Zins, Städtisches Museum Lüdenscheid, 1998), nu – improvesation – live (CD, jointly with V. Globokar, Mechernich: Telos Records, 1998). She participated in numerous international festivals of new music, free jazz and sound poetry in various European countries, including the following ones: I International Poetry Festival (Hamburg, 1996), International KlangArt-Festival (Osnabruk, 1997), “Stichting Logos” Women’s Festival (Gent, 1997), “bobeobi”, Internationales Festival der Lautpoesie (Berlin, 1998), I International bauhaus der Kommunikation (Nixdorf, 1998), Klang-Aktionen-neue musik (Munich, 1998), 7 International Voices Festival (Innsbruck, 1998), Festival de la Bâtie (Geneva, 1999), Festival der Soundpoetry Carl-Orf-Saal (Munich, 2000), Polysonneries (Lyon, 2001) and many others. In 1995 Beumer’s video recordings and materials from her performances were included in the international archives “Ed Sunders Video-library for Sound poetry” (Woodstook, USA). She is the founder and organiser of the duet “VOX@NOX” (vocal, electronics; jointly with F. Niehusmann, 1996) and of the musical trio (jointly with F. Jentsch, T. Knappe), as a member of which she conducted a number of concerts and musical performances. Beumer’s works were repeatedly broadcast on radio stations in different countries, including: ORF, RAI, SFR, WDR, NDR, SFB-Berlin, SWF-Baden-Baden and others. In 1998 a film “Isabella Beumer::voiceart:” about Beumer’s poetic activities was made on the studio DWF (Salzburg). She lives and works in Herford (Germany).
