Philadelpho MENEZES (Brazil)
Philadelpho Menezes (1960 Ц 2000, São Paulo, Brazil) Ц poet, translator, essay writer, publisher. He is the author of a number of poetry books, including such as: Poemas (1980-82) (São Paulo: Aicáis Ed., 1984), Demolições (ou poemas aritméticos) (São Paulo: Arte Pau-Brasil, 1988) and others, and also of the experimental poetry editions: Poesia Sonora Ц do Fonetismo às Poéticas Contemporâneas da Voz (CD, São Paulo: Fapesp/LLS Ц PUC/SP, 1996), Poesia Sonora Ц uma anthologia internacional (São Paulo: Fapesp/LLS Ц PUC/SP, 1998), Interpoetry Interactive Hypermedia Poetry (CD-R, São Paulo: Fapesp/LLS Ц PUC/SP, 2000). He published six theoretical books on various aspects of experimental poetry: Poética e Visualidade Ц uma trajetória da poesia brasileira contemporânea (Campinas: Editoria da UNICAMP, 1991), Poesia Sonora Ц poéticas experimentais da voz no século XX (São Paulo: EDUC, 1992), A crise do passado Ц modernidade. Vanguarda. Metamodernidade (São Paulo: Experimento, 1994), Poetics and Visuality (translated into English by doctor, professor H. Polkinhorn, San Diego: San Diego State University Press, 1995), Signos Plurais Ц Midia, Arte e Cotidiano na Globalizaçaõ (São Paulo: Experimento, 1994), Poesia Concreta e Visual (São Paulo: Atica, 1998). As a translator Menezes prepared for publishing and published in Portugese works of F. Pessoa, M. Praz, and also selected concrete poetry productions by E. Gomringer: 31 poemas (jointly with P. Garnier, São Paulo: Arte Pau-Brasil, 1988). MenezesТs theoretical essays and articles, dedicated to experimental poetry problems and issues of contemporary art, were regularly published in various magazines and topical collections in Brazil, including such as: FACE Ц revista de Comunicaçaõ e Semiótica (São Paulo), Comunicaçaõ e Sociedade (São Bernardo do Campo), Livros e Artes (São Paulo), Imagens (Campinas), etc., also abroad in the: Corrosive Signs (Washington), Visible Language, 27.4 Ц Visual Poetry Ц An International Anthology (Rhode Island), Poesia Vixual Ц México Internacional (Mexico), Experimental Ц Visual Ц Concrete: Avant-garde poetry since the 1950Тs (Amsterdam Ц Atlanta) and others. His poetry productions were included in the international anthologies: Saciedade dos Poetas Vivos Ц Visual (Rio de Janeiro: Blocos Ed., 1993), Konkrete Poesie Ц Zwei Generationen (St. Gallen: H.-P. Kaeser Typograf SWB, 1993), Antologia: Nuovi Mondi (Baobab, #25, Reggio Emilia: Elytra Ed., 1994), and also Word Sound Poetry (published by E. Minarelli, Italy, 1999), Poesia Visual Latinoamericana (published by C. Padin, Spain 1999). He organised a number of exhibitions of visual poetry and seminars-conferences on experimental poetry, including such as Intersign Poetry (CCSP, São Paulo, 1998), I International Exhibition of Visual Poetry of São Paulo (CCSP, São Paulo, 1988), Intersign poetry Ц from visual to sound and digital poems (Paço das Artes, São Paulo, 1998) and others. He participated in conferences in Brazil, Portugal, Italy, Ireland, and the USA. He worked as a professor at the Department of Semiotics and Communication of the Pontifical Catholic University (São Paulo). In July 2000 Philadelpho Menezes was killed in a car crash.
