Steve McCaffery (1947, Sheffield, England) Ц poet, artist, critic, essay writer, publisher. He began his creative literary and artistic activities in the late 1960s. He is the author of numerous poetry books, fiction, literary criticism, including such as: Dr. SadhuТs Muffins (Victoria: Press Porcépic, 1974), A Displacement of Sappho (Erin, Ont.: PorcupineТs Quill, 1978), Legend (jointly with B. Andrews, Ch. Bernstein, R. Di Palma, R. Silliman, New York: Segue Foundation, 1980), The Black Debt (London: Nightwood Ed., 1989), Modern Reading: Poems 1969-1990 (London Writers Forum, 1991), The Cheat of Words (Toronto: ECW Press, 1996) and others, among the literary criticism books are the following ones: North of Intention: Critical Writings 1973-86 (New York: Roof Books, 1986), Imagining Language (jointly with J. Rasula, Cambridge: The MIT Press, 1998), Prior to Meaning: The Protosemantic and Poetics (Evanston: Northwestern Univ. Press, 2000) and others. McCaffery was a member of the sound poetic ensemble УThe Four HorsemenФ (1970-89, jointly with R. Barreto-Rivera, P. Dutton, bp Nichol) Ц the key phenomenon in the Canadian sound poetry, that to a great extent determined the development of this genre in North America. Jointly with the group he produced a number of experimental poetry editions, among the sound ones are the following: Canadada (LP, Toronto: Griffin House, 1972), Live in the West (LP, Toronto: Starborne Productions, 1977), 2 Nights (MC, Toronto: Underwich Editions, 1988) and others. McCaffery prepared and published (jointly with bp Nichol) a number of poetry books, catalogues and magazines, including such as: The Story So Four (Toronto: Coach House Press, 1976), R. Murray Schafter: A Collection (Toronto: Open Letter 4, #4-5, 1977), Sound Poetry: A Catalogue (Toronto: Underwhich Ed., 1978), Canadian Paataphysics (Toronto: Open Letter 4, #6-7, 1981). He presented poetry readings at various international festivals, including such as: Village Gate (jointly with A. Ginsberg, O. Paz, New York, 1984), Polyphonix (George Pompidou Centre, Paris, 1985), 5me Festival Internationale de Poésie Contemporaine (Tarascon, 1988), and also at a large number of educational institutions in the USA, Great Britain, Canada, Spain, France, etc. As a guest professor he delivered lectures on the contemporary literature and art at various universities, including the Cambridge University (Cambridge, Great Britain), Ohio State University (Columbus, USA), Oxford University (Oxford, Great Britain), University of Calgary (Calgary, Canada), California Institute of Arts (Valencia, USA), Universidad Autonoma de Madrid (Madrid, Spain) and many others. McCafferyТs works were repeatedly broadcast on various TV and radio channels, including: CBC Radio (1978-81), TV Ontario (1992), Hungarian Radio (1993). He is a laureate of various rewards and prizes in the sphere of literature, including УAФ Award for Poetry & Criticism (1988), Non-fiction Award in Criticism (1990), Award in Arts Writing, УAФ Category (1992) and others. Since 1998 he has been a professor at the English Department of York University (Toronto). Steve McCaffery lives and works in Toronto (Ontario, Canada).
