Richard MARTEL (Quebec)
Richard Martel (1950, Chicoutimi, Quebec) – poet, multimedia-artist, curator, publisher. He is one of the founding authors of the magazine “Intervention” (1977-84, since 1984 – “Inter”) – a multidisciplinary edition that focuses on the issues of theory and practice of the contemporary art, and was established not only as an instrument of collective thinking (sociology – G. Durand, visual arts – J.-C. Saint-Hilare, social phenomena – Martel, G. Arteau, J.-C. Gagnon and others), but also as an innovation space for the elaboration and practicing of various communication technologies. He is the organiser and curator of numerous art events, including such as: Symposium International de sculpture environnementale de Chicoutimi (Chicoutimi, 1980), Art et Société (Quebec, 1981), of a series of festivals “Festival d’In(ter)ventions” – Nåoson(g) Cabaret (Quebec, 1984), In Memoriam George Maciunas (Quebec, 1984), Espèces Nomades (Quebec, 1987), Immedia Concerto (Quebec, 1988), Interscop (Warsaw, 1990), Interzone (Quebec, 1992) and so on, co-organiser of the Première Biennale d’art actuel à Quebec (Quebec, 1990), Poliphonix 16 (Quebec, 1991), Manoeuvre nomade (tour of the group “Inter/Le Lieu”, Krakow – Marseilles – Barcelona – Valencia – Duero, 1994), Rencontre Internationale d’art performance et multimédia (Quebec, 1996) and many others. Martel is the author of a number of books, including such as: Richard Martel, activiés artistique 1978-82 (Quebec: Intervention Ed., 1983), Je 2 mains (Ventabren: NéPE Ed., 1988), Élégie: vérification neutre, texte d’installation (Quebec: Obscure, 1989), L’Art en actes. Le Lieu, centre en art actuel 1982-1997 (Quebec: Inter Ed., 1998) and others. He co-ordinated editions dedicated to sound poetry and audio art, including the following ones: In Memoriam George Maciunas (2 LPs, jointly with D. Rochette, Quebec: Intervention Ed., 1985), Inter K-7/87 (MC, Quebec: Intervention Ed., 1987), Canada-Italy (jointly with E. Minarelli, Cento: Polypoetry Rec., 1987), Anniversaire de l’art (CD, jointly with D. Rochette, Quebec: Intervention Ed., 1996). He is the author of numerous articles for catalogues, literary miscellanies and anthologies published in Quebec, Canada and abroad. Martel conducted more than two hundred actions and performances at various galleries and museums in America, Europe and Japan. His creative activities are of social character and is the subject for consideration for leading art critics. “He is a supporter of Quebec independence… bearer of a great idea brought down by the history itself” (P. Restany). He has participated in a large number of international festivals, including such as: Festival International de poésie contemporaine (Cogolin, 1986), Polyphonix 13, Hommage à Filliou (Paris, 1988), 3 Festival Internacional de Performance y Poesia d’Accio (Valencia, 1992), Polyphonix 20 (George Pompidou Center, Paris 1993), 1st Nagano International Performance Art Festival (Nagano, 1993), Polyphonix au pays de Tintin et de Magritte (Liege – Brussels, 1994), International Situationniste, Hommage à Guy Debord (Montreal, 1995) and many others. Since 1977 he has been head of the “Editions Intervention,” since 1982 – co-ordinator of the Center for Contemporary Art “Le Lieu” (Quebec). He is a holder of various prizes and rewards, including the Prix du Rayonnement International du Conseil de la culture (Quebec, 1996). Richard Martel lives and works in Quebec-city (Quebec).
