Jarl HAMMARBERG (Sweden)
Jarl Hammarberg (1940, Gothenburg, Sweden) Ц poet, artist, performer. Started his creative literary and artistic activities in the early 1960s. He is one of the representatives of the Swedish trend of concrete poetry, the generation that developed under the influence of Öyvind FahlströmТs creative activities. As a member of the musical-poetic circle (B. E. Johnson, Å. Hodell, L. Nylén, M. G. Bengtsson, T. Ekbom, B. af Klintberg), most of whom were also members of УFylkingenФ group, and in collaboration with the authors of the УOdysséФ magazine Ц with I. Laaban and K. F. Reuterswärd Ц he creatively considered the phenomenon of concrete poetry and worked out his own distinct stylistics. He is the author of a number of poetry books, including such as: Bord duka er (1964), JA JA JA JA JA JA JA (1966), Poemoj senvortoj (1971), Brödernas resaФ (1979), AJN (1983), Att att gata (1984) and others. He considers Poemoj sen vortoj and AJN the most revealing among the books of experimental poetry in which, according to the author, he managed to achieve the level of Уwordless poetry.Ф Hammarberg establishes the exact formal connection between the strictly structured semiotic texts of the 1970s-80s, meant for contemplation only, and the scores of the 1990s, structurally disorganised and phonetically oriented. Searches for the formal and contentual compromise urged the author on writing and publishing a number of books in the international language of esperanto. Since the midst 1960s he has been the author and participant of a large number of solo and group exhibitions of concrete-visual poetry in various museums and galleries in Sweden and also of the international exhibitions, including the following ones: Svisch (Modern Art Museum, Stockholm, 1964; retrospective show of Swedish artistsТ works), Konkret Poesi (Centre Culturel Suédois, Paris, 1972; works of poets from Belguim, Sweden, France, Uruguay, USA) and others. In 1968, Hammarberg in collaboration with Sonja Åkesson took part in the International Text-Sound Festival in Stockholm (Museum of Modern Art & Swedish Broadcasting Corporation, among the other participants of the project are B. Cobbing, Fr. Dufrêne, I. Laaban, B. E. Johnson, S. Hanson and others) representing the sound poem Frågar du vad vi håller på med? (ФAsk me what we are doing?Ф) Later this work was issued by the Swedish radio in the group LP-collection Text-Sound-compositions. Vol. 2 (Stockholm: Sveriges Radios förlag, Fylkingen Rec., 1968). At different periods HammarbergТs experimental poetical activities were presented at the: Galleri Karlsson (Stockholm, 1965), Västerås Stadsteater (1968), Galleri Lucidor (Stockholm, 1981), Galleri Maneten (Gothenburg, 1989), Galleri Grå (Stockholm, 1995), Galleri 20 (Gothenburg, 1996), Galleri Box (Gothenburg, 2000) and others. At present the author remains the adherent of the concrete poetry ideas of the 1960s-70s, he goes on with the literary experiment, correlating his performances with the frontier theatrical pieces and sound shows, balancing between jazz and poetry. Jarl Hammarberg lives and works in Västra Frölunda (Sweden).
