Jean-Claude GAGNON (Quebec)
Jean-Claude Gagnon (1947, Quebec, Canada) Ц poet, performer, mail-artist, publisher. Graduated from the Philosophy Department of the Université Laval (Quebec, 1976). He started his creative literary and artistic activities in the midst 1970s. He held eight solo exhibitions in Canada and Italy (visual poetry, book-art, photo and installations). He conducted numerous solo performances at various festivals and colloquia of contemporary poetry, namely at the: Congrès dТArt Postal (Italy, 1991), Symposium dТarts visuels (Canada, 1991), Réparation de Poésie (Canada, 1995) and others, he also participated in a number of collective performances as a member of the group УInter Le Lieu,Ф including the performances at the Espace Donguy (Paris, 1984), Franklin Furnace (New York, 1986), Pitt Gallery (Vancouver, 1993), at the following festivals: Festival de la musique ennuyante (Quebec, 1986), Festival de la poesie de Trois-Rivieres (1987, 1992), Réparation de Poésie (Quebec, since 1985 till 1996) and others. His sound poetry productions are presented in the audio collections: Inter K-7/Т87 (Quebec: Inter Ed., 1987), Italia Ц Canada (Cento Ц Quebec: 3 ViTre Ц Inter Ed., 1987), Festival dТIN(TER)VENTIONS Ц 2 in Memoriam G. Maciunas (Quebec: Inter Ed., 1985), Festival musique ennuyante (Quebec: Oeil de Poisson Ed., 1988), and a number of joint audio productions were created with E. and S. Morandi (Ponte Nossa, 1993). Since 1989 he has been the editor and publisher of the network magazine УRéparation de PoésieФ (Quebec), that tackles the issues of theory and practice of the international visual and experimental poetry. Gagnon is the author of numerous publications in network magazines, catalogues, albums and literary miscellanies, including such as Doc(k)s (#66, France, 1984), Inter (#34, Quebec, 1987), Performance ou Canada. 1970-90 (Quebec, 1991), LТart voyageur (Ottawa, 1993), Offerta Speciale (Turin, 1993), he has also participated in the assemblings: Uni/vers (;) (Germany, 1992), Mani Art (France, 1994), Busta Stopresa (Italy, 1995), Paint it Green (Spain, 1996), Field Report (Great Britain, 1997), MMM, Réseau Carted (France, 1999), etc. Since 1978 till 1990 Gagnon published his photographic works in the Canadian magazine on the contemporary art УInterФ (Quebec). In 1993 at the international exhibition of the artistic miniature in the Galerie Del Bello (Toronto) he was rewarded with a prize in the section Mixte-media. He participated in numerous group exhibitions of visual and experimental poetry, mail art both in Canada and abroad. Among the exhibitions held in the 1990s are the following ones: Terra Affirma (Washington, 1991), Piero Mandzoni (Florence, 1991), Art voyageur (Ottawa, 1991), International Network Culture (Dallas, 1992), Livres dТartiste (Montreal, 1994), Lunar Landing (Vancouver, 1995), Visual Poetry (Bento-Gonçalves, 1996), Gutenberg (Luxembourg, 1997), Visual Poetry (St. Kilda, 1997), Les artistes lâchés lousse (Quebec, 1999) and others. His visual poetry works have been published in a number of international anthologies, among the recent ones are the following: Point of view. Visual poetry 1990s (Kaliningrad, 1998), Poesia Totale 1897-1997 (Mantova, 1998). He has participated in conferences on contemporary art and literature.
