Giovanni FONTANA (Italy)

Giovanni Fontana (1946, Frosinone, Italy) poet, artist, performer, publisher. He has been working in the area of lingua-art, intermedia techniques and multicode languages for more than thirty-five years. Systematic research into the frontier artistic manifestations and synthesis of art-components into single phono-visual poetic matrices allowed him to introduce into use the conceptual gradation of text: an integrated text, a polytext, a multipoetic hypertext, a cross ultratext. Fontanas works are often considered as scores, in which the pre-text component promotes further sound poetic and perform-implementations. He is the author of a number of plays, including such as: Tutuomini (1972), Sturtizia (1972), Ticoshow-Tacoshow (1973), opera score Radio/Dramma (1977), visual poetry books Le lamie del labirinto (1981), Luomo delle pulizie (1984), poetic anthology of the 1965-75 Scrittura Lineari (1986), micro-commentaries Homaly Altrove (1990), book of sound short stories Tarocco Meccanico (1990), etc. Since 1972 till 1984 he was the editor and publisher of the Dimisura magazine, that occupied a very important position in the European poetic environment of the 1970s. In 1987 he initiated publishing of the international poetic magazine La Taverna di Auerbach, dedicated to the theoretical and practical research of intermedia-trends in the contemporary literature. Fontana is also an editor of the sound poetry magazine MOMO and a member of the Editorial Board of the audio miscellany Baobab. He has participated (since 1959) in more than 500 group exhibitions of experimental and visual poetry, including such as: Concreto & Visuale (Melbourne, 1979), Destinataire Paris (Paris, 1979), XVI Bienal de São Paulo (São Paulo, 1981), Italics 1925/1985 (New York, 1985), XI Quadrennial of Rome (Rome, 1986), Libri e pagine dartista in Italia (Florence, 1989), Art is Books (Hasselt, 1991) and many others. Fontana conducted more than one hundred sound poetry and perform shows at various international festivals, among them are the following ones: Video Sound Poetry (Ferrara, 1984), Espèces Nomades (Quebec, 1986), Festival de la Bâtie (Geneva, 1988), Polyphonix (George Pompidou Center, Paris, 1989), Milanopoesia (Milan, 1990), International Performance Art (Dresden, 1993), NIPAF (Tokyo, 1995), Polyphonix 30 (Barcelona, 1997), Polysonneries (Lyon, 1999) and many others. He is the author of more than two hundred publications, his works are represented in more than twenty anthologies of contemporary poetry, including such as: Italian Poetry 1960-80: From Neo to Post Avant-Garde (San Francisco, 1982), Nuovi Signali (Rimini, 1983), Sine Aesthetica Sinestetica (Rome, 1990), Poesia Sonora (São Paulo, 1992) and others. The sound poetry works were presented in more than thirty MC, LP, CD-editions in various countries, among them are the following ones: Voooxing Poooêtre (3 ViTre Ed., 1982), Antologia Polipoetica (STI Ed., 1986), Spagna Messico Italia (3 ViTre Pair Ed., 1988), Storia della Poesia Sonora (Baobab Ed., 1989), Radio Art (HP Ed., 1997), Europafestival 97 (Hermes Ed., 1997), Operette dartistes (Prod.
