Pierre-André ARCAND (Quebec)
Pierre-André Arcand (1942, Quebec, Quebec) – poet, lingua-artist, artist, performer. In 1972 he graduated from the Université Laval (MA, Quebec). Since 1978 till 1988 he collaborated with the artistic group “Le Lieu,” taking part in the administrative and publishing activities of the group. He has been working very productively in the interdisciplinary areas of the contemporary art, combining in his works sound and text, installation and performance practices. One of the characteristic features of his sound stylistics is the use of the tape recorder’s “loops” (in the 1970-80s, and samples – in the 1990s). By means of imitated delays, use of short changing loops/samples and superpositions Arcand constructs a complicated sound volume, supplementing the acoustic production with various vocal, verbal and noise effects. He is the author of a number of CD-releases, including such as: Eres+7 (Quebec: OBZ, Obscure Ed., 1993), Eres+16 (Quebec: OBZ, OHM éditions, 1995), Eres+21 (Quebec: OHM/AVTR 007, OHM éditions, 1997), Les machines animales (Quebec: OHM/AVTR 013, OHM éditions, 1999). He presented a large number of sound productions in group audio collections and anthologies in ÌÑ, LP and CD-formats, including such as: Nåoson(g) Cabaret (Quebec: Intervention Ed., 1984), In Memoriam George Maciunas (Quebec: Intervention Ed., 1985), Inter K-7/87 (MC, Quebec: Intervention Ed., 1987), Canada-Italy (Cento: 3 ViTre Pair, 1987), Sound Symposium 1990 (Terre-Neuve: Don Wherry Ed., 1990), Baobab #23 (Reggio Emilia: edizioni Elytra, 1994), MOMO 1 (Frosinone: Rouge et Noir Ed., 1996), Anniversaire de l’art (Quebec: Intervention Ed., 1996), Doc(k)s Son-3/17-20 (Ajaccio: Akenaton Ed., 1998) and many others. Arcand participated in international festivals of experimental poetry and contemporary art, including the series of festivals “Festival d’In(ter)ventions” (Quebec) – Nåoson(g) Cabaret (1984), Espèces Nomades (1987), Immedia Concerto (1988), Interzone (1992), and also: Festival Ultimatum (Montreal, 1985, 1987), Polyphonix (George Pompidou Center, Paris, 1987), New Music America (Montreal, 1990), Poliphonix 16 (Quebec, 1991), 8 Festival International de poesie (Trois-Riveere, 1992), Tercer Festival de performance (Mexico City, 1994), Veneziapoesia’96 (Venice, 1996) and others. He conducted a large number of sound performances and installation projects at various galleries and museums of the world, among them are the following: Kasseler Kunstverein (Kassel, 1986), Malmö Kunsthall (Malmö, 1986), Franklin Furnace (New York, 1986), Centre Georges Pompidou (Paris, 1987), Statens Museum for Kunst (Copenhagen, 1988), Centro de Carmen (Valencia, 1991), etc. He is the author of a number of poetry books, among them are: Plis sous pli (jointly with J.-Y. Fréchette, Montreal-Paris: du Noroît Ed., 1982), Petit livre (Quebec: Restreintes Ed., 1983), Écrire fait du bruit (Quebec: Restreintes et Avatar Ed., 1997), Le livre sonore (Quebec: OHM éditions, 1999), of numerous book-objects and sound book-art productions. He is one of the founders of the audio artists group “AVATAR” (1992, members are: J. Robert, M. Meilleur, Ch. Migone, D. Landry, Ch. Dumas, D. Michaud and others), and also of the recording studio of the same name and the artist’s studio. Pierre-André Arcand lives and works in Quebec-city (Quebec).
