Philip CORNER (USA)
Philip Corner (1933, Bronx, New York, USA) Ц composer, musician, artist. Received professional musical education at the High School of Music & Art (BA, New York, 1955), Conservatoire NatТl de Paris (MA, Paris, 1959). Besides formal education he took lessons of piano playing and vocal, studied calligraphy, meditation, dreaming. Among the figures who had a great impact on his creative development he names J. Cage, R. Maxfield, M, Camus, M. Corner. He was an active participant of the Fluxus-movement. Besides composing music and playing various instruments he is involved in fine art, installation, photography and video art, book design, performance and happening. His productions were performed in more than thirty countries by different musical groups, including such as Carnegie-Mellon New Music Ensemble (Pittsburgh), Downtown Ensemble (New York), Ensemble УlТArt Pour lТArtФ (Hamburg), Grup Instrumental Catala (Barcelona), HR Ensemble fur Neue Musik (Frankfurt), The Orchestra of New York (New York), Southbank Gamelan Ensemble (Toronto) and many others, productions (for the piano, trumpet, clarinet, trombone, violin, violoncello, viola, flute, harp, etc.) solo by: N. J. Paik, C. Santos, L. Polansky, Ch. Morrow, M. Goldstein, Ch. Moorman, B. Held, M. Neuhaus and others. Altogether his productions were performed in one hundred and thirty New York concert halls, among them are the following ones: Brooklyn Academy of Music, Carnegie Hall Artists, Central Hall Artists, Museum of the City of New York, Whitney Museum, World Trade Center Plaza, etc. Corner is the author of a large number of productions in the area of music, dancing, theatre, happening, literature, jointly with R. Maxfield, P. Oliveros, A. Lockwood, D, Higgins, Y. Ono, J. Rothenberg, W. Vostell, B. Vautier, B. Patterson, M. Shiomi, J. Jones, R. Filliou, E. Williams, J. Mac Low and others. Besides intense performing activities, for fourty years he was involved in teaching at The New School for Social Research (1967-70), New Lincoln High School (1966-72), Rutgers U/Livingston College, Mason Gross School of the Arts (1972-92), and also conducted work shops and lectured at more than one hundred educational institutions in Europe and America. He participated in a large number of festivals of contemporary art and music in various countries, and also in the Fluxus-festivals: Festum Fluxorum (Wiesbaden Ц Amsterdam, 1962-63), Avant-Garde Festival (1960-70), 1962 Fluxus 1982 (Wiesbaden Ц Berlin), Ubi Fluxus Ibi Motus (Venice Biennial, 1990), La Presenza Fluxus (Reggio Emilia, 1990), Fluxfests (Cologne Ц Wiesbaden Ц Bolzano Ц Seoul, 1992-93) and many others. His productions have been numerously released in LP, MC, and CD-formats; scores, books, articles, essays, multiples have been published by various publishing houses in many countries. He has conducted ten solo retrospective exhibitions and participated in more than a hundred group exhibitions. CornerТs productions are kept in more than two hundred private and public collections in America, Europe, Africa, Australia. Since 1992 Philip Corner has been living and working in Reggio Emilia (Italy).
